Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a forty-day period (not including Sundays) of fasting and reflection. It symbolises repentance and mourning, reflecting Biblical teachings on the importance of acknowledging sin and seeking forgiveness. It recalls the forty days Jesus fasted in the wilderness and back further in time to when, it is said, the Israelites wandered in the Sinai for forty years, before entering the Promised Land.

The practice of placing ashes on the forehead dates back to the early centuries of the Church, serving as a sign of humility and a reminder of human mortality.

Join us tonight for this solemn and timeless celebration in the life of the Church.
