Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of Lent in the liturgical year. The name "Shrove" comes from the Old English word "shrive," meaning to confess one's sins and receive absolution. Historically, this day was a time for Christians to prepare for Lent by confessing their sins and seeking forgiveness.
Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday is the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. Many Christian congregations thus observe the day through eating pancakes or, more specifically, the holding of pancake breakfasts or suppers.
